How to Apply Pinball Cabinet Vinyl Wraps
Applying vinyl wraps doesn’t have to be difficult. If you’ve ever worried about messing up the wrap, damaging the cabinet, or trapping air bubbles, this guide is for you. The short version is that the wrap is peel and stick, it’s forgiving, and the whole process is easier than it looks. Watch the video below and you’ll see exactly how it’s done.
Watch First: The Whole Process in One Video This short video shows how to apply the artwork from start to finish. If you only have a minute, this is the one thing to watch.
The rest of this guide covers the same steps in writing, plus the tools you’ll need and a few tips to help you get a clean result. Why Applying Your Own Wrap Is the Fun Part
Our wraps are designed for DIY. You take artwork that started as an idea on a screen and turn it into a real machine you built yourself. That moment, when the cabinet goes from plain panels to a finished pinball machine, is the best part of the project.
Is It Hard? What Most People Worry About Almost everyone asks the same question before their first wrap: how do I apply this without making a mistake? The usual fears are:
Messing up the wrap
Damaging the cabinet
Leaving air bubbles
Here’s the reassuring part. Our wraps are made from a peel-and-stick vinyl with a long-lasting adhesive. If you leave an air bubble, or a section doesn’t sit right, you can peel it back and reapply it. That gives you room to get it right, so one mistake doesn’t ruin the job.
What You’ll Need You don’t need specialist equipment. A few simple tools are enough:
Squeegee: to press the vinyl down smoothly and push air out
Craft knife (such as an Exacto knife): for trimming and cutting the backing
Water sprayer: to keep the surface clean and free of dirt before applying
Clips or white tape: to hold the vinyl in position while you work
Step-by-Step: How to Apply Your Pinball Wrap Step 1: Prepare the Surface
A clean surface gives you a better finish. Make sure the cabinet panel is free of dust and dirt before the vinyl goes on. A light mist from a water sprayer helps you keep the surface clean as you work.
Step 2: Position the Vinyl Before you peel anything, line the wrap up with the panel. Use clips or white tape to hold it in place so it doesn’t shift while you work. Step 3: Peel the Backing in Sections For larger parts, don’t remove the entire backing at once. Peel back, or cut the backing into, a manageable section to start with. Working in small sections is the best way to keep control of large panels like the cabinet sides. Step 4: Squeegee From One End Start at one end and press the vinyl down with your squeegee, working steadily across the panel so the air is pushed out ahead of the squeegee instead of getting trapped underneath. You can see this technique in the video above. Step 5: Continue Section by Section Peel back more of the backing and keep going, squeegeeing as you move. Take your time and keep the same direction throughout. Step 6: Fix Any Bubbles If you spot an air bubble, you can lift the vinyl and apply it again. The adhesive is designed to allow this, so you can adjust until the finish looks right. Step 7: Trim the Edges Once the vinyl is down and smooth, use your craft knife to trim any excess along the edges for a clean, professional-looking finish. Tips for a Clean Result Take your time. There’s no prize for finishing fast. Slow and steady avoids bubbles.
Work one panel at a time. Finish a panel before starting the next.
Use the right amount of pressure. Firm and even, from one end to the other.
Don’t panic about mistakes. Lifting and reapplying is part of the process.
Watch the video once before you start. It’s much easier to follow when you’ve seen it done.
Before You Apply: Check Your Fit A wrap that fits well is much easier to apply. If you haven’t already, read our guide on how to measure a pinball cabinet for artwork so your panels are sized correctly from the start. We also double-check your dimensions with you before printing, so you can be confident when your wrap arrives. Need a Hand?
